About the position

The Assistant Underwriter position at EmblemHealth involves supporting Senior Underwriters in managing both existing and new business accounts, particularly focusing on Broker Accounts. The role is crucial in ensuring that underwriting processes are completed within established time frames, which is essential for maintaining operational efficiency and client satisfaction. The Assistant Underwriter will primarily work with HIP community-rated accounts, which requires a solid understanding of the underwriting process and the specific needs of these accounts. In this role, the Assistant Underwriter will be responsible for processing sold new business groups and will need to develop and maintain strong working relationships between the Underwriting and Marketing departments. This collaboration is vital for ensuring that all parties are aligned and that the underwriting process runs smoothly. The position also involves maintaining logs and completing various reports as directed, which contributes to the overall organization and tracking of underwriting activities. The Assistant Underwriter will engage in a variety of tasks, including underwriting new and existing groups, reviewing and analyzing Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and collecting data to produce reports from EmblemHealth's ER Datamart. Providing technical and administrative support to the department is also a key responsibility, as is preparing initial incurred claim reports and benefit modifications in response to requests from groups, brokers, or consultants. Effective communication with Sales Representatives regarding underwriting needs is essential, as is the ability to perform related group underwriting duties as assigned by the Manager or other departmental management. The role may also involve other duties and projects as assigned, making it a dynamic position within the underwriting team.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and existing groups within the published departmental time frames.
  • Review and analyze Request for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Collect data and produce reports from EmblemHealth's ER Datamart.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the department.
  • Prepare initial incurred claim reports and benefit modifications in response to requests from groups, brokers, or consultants.
  • Communicate Underwriting needs to the Sales Representatives.
  • Perform related group underwriting duties as assigned by the Manager or other Departmental Management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or a related quantitative field of study required.
  • 0 - 2+ years of relevant, professional work experience required.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal) required.
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem‐solving skills required.
  • Ability to work independently and in a deadline‐oriented environment required.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required.
  • Ability to take initiative in developing and completing projects required.
