About the position

The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff at the University of California Merced serves as a senior aide to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Engagement. This role involves strategic planning, resource allocation, and personnel management across various units within the division. The incumbent is responsible for improving processes and policies, liaising with key campus partners, and representing the Vice Chancellor in their absence. The position requires a strong focus on student success and operational efficiency within a diverse and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with senior leaders and departmental directors on strategic matters impacting the Division and the institution.
  • Oversee operational, administrative, and personnel policies and procedures within the Division.
  • Coordinate items referred to the Vice Chancellor's Office and ensure timely responses.
  • Represent the Vice Chancellor on institutional committees and manage signature authority in their absence.
  • Provide administrative leadership on initiatives integral to student success and coordinate divisional events.
  • Conduct risk assessment and mitigation analyses at both the Divisional and unit level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area from an accredited institution (required).
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education or a similarly complex organization (required).
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational processes, protocols, and procedures.
  • Advanced skills in planning, program and project management, facilitation, and collaboration.
  • Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree such as a Master's, PhD, or EdD in higher education or a related field (preferred).
  • Proven ability to coach, facilitate, and influence people at all levels.
  • Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques.
