About the position

The Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff in the Office of Advancement at Georgetown University plays a pivotal role in overseeing the organizational operations, budget planning, workforce development, personnel management, and human capital strategy for the Office of Advancement (OA) and the Office of the Vice President (VP) for Advancement. This position is crucial for making high-level decisions, developing strategies, anticipating problems, and removing barriers to ensure the success of the Office of Advancement in achieving both departmental and university-wide goals. The AVP and Chief of Staff will collaborate closely with various university departments, including Finance, Human Resources, and Compliance, to ensure that OA practices and policies align with the broader objectives of the university. In addition to overseeing the execution of the OA staffing plan, the AVP and Chief of Staff is responsible for managing one of the largest budgets within the university, ensuring compliance with financial audit requirements. This role involves leading a team of 6-8 direct reports and overseeing the work of 17 full-time staff members across various areas, including Finance, Production, and Talent Management. Key responsibilities include revenue management, oversight of gift administration, and financial management, all while providing leadership and strategic direction to the team. The AVP and Chief of Staff will serve as a senior adviser to the VP for Advancement, collaborating on campaign priorities and communicating the status of the Board of Directors' financial investment in the Office of Advancement. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Advancement and is a member of the OA's Executive leadership team, working closely with other senior leaders to set and manage the university's Advancement budget and staffing needs for successful campaign execution.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee organizational operations for the Office of Advancement and the Office of the Vice President for Advancement.
  • Manage budget planning and financial oversight for one of the largest budgets in the university.
  • Lead workforce development and personnel management strategies for the Office of Advancement.
  • Collaborate with university departments to ensure alignment of OA practices with university policies.
  • Oversee the execution of the OA staffing plan and optimize office organization for campaign success.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to a team of 6-8 direct reports and 17 full-time staff members.
  • Manage revenue and oversight of gift administration and accounting processes.
  • Serve as a senior adviser to the VP for Advancement and communicate campaign priorities to the Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive work experience in higher education.
  • Proven track record of managing business operations in a complex organization.
  • Ability to coordinate fundraising efforts with academic operations and financial priorities.
  • Skilled in building and guiding complex, functionally diverse teams.
  • Expertise in communications, change management, and advancement.
