About the position

The Assistant Vice President (AVP)/Controller at Simpson College is responsible for overseeing accounting and financial reporting activities. This role involves preparing financial statements, managing audits, supervising accounting staff, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The AVP/Controller will also play a key role in budget preparation and financial control systems improvement, while serving as a liaison with external auditors and providing support to faculty and staff on budgetary matters.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial statements and financial reporting including general ledger maintenance and monthly reconciliations.
  • Manage all aspects of the annual audit, including preparation of GAAP financial statements and serving as liaison to the audit firm.
  • Coordinate accounts payable and payroll postings to the accounting system, and perform month-end and year-end accounting close procedures.
  • Supervise the accounting for general fixed assets and ensure proper recording on financial statements.
  • Review monthly revenue and expenditures reports for accuracy and make necessary journal entries to correct errors.
  • Assist with the preparation of the operating budget and monitor cash flow requirements.
  • Supervise accounting staff members and oversee all accounting functions.
  • Generate required periodic reports for internal and external use, including financial records for external audits.
  • Maintain investment accounts and documentation with the assistance of the Assistant Controller.
  • Develop, implement, document, and monitor accounting policies to improve financial control systems.
  • Train budget managers on policies and procedures for departmental budgets.
  • Review disbursements for conformity with policy and procedures.

Requirements

  • BA in accounting and 5 - 10 years of progressive experience in accounting.
  • CPA designation and advanced accounting skills.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations pertaining to higher education.
  • Experience in endowment and grant accounting.
  • Experience working with external auditors and preparing GAAP financial statements.
  • Experience in documenting procedures and internal controls.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with or ability to learn the Ellucian product Colleague.
  • Experience with or ability to learn software Prophix, Fundriver, and Slate.
  • Experience in implementing accounting-related software.
