About the position

The Assistant Vice President for Research (AVPR) at Brown University plays a senior-level role in enhancing the university's research infrastructure, ensuring it meets the needs of investigators and their collaborators. The AVPR oversees Sponsored Projects and Research Integrity, managing research administration and compliance while supporting faculty throughout the grant lifecycle. This position involves strategic leadership within the Division of Research, focusing on resource deployment, policy development, and maximizing operational efficiency to facilitate research activities at Brown.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Sponsored Projects and Research Integrity, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Support faculty throughout the grant lifecycle, from proposal submission to project completion.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that serve research needs while ensuring compliance with funding agency and university policies.
  • Provide counsel on resource deployment and address emerging opportunities and risks within the Division of Research.
  • Chair and support faculty and administrative committees related to research administration.
  • Develop key metrics and performance indicators to inform stakeholders and guide executive decision-making.
  • Manage business process changes to improve organizational efficiencies and customer service for the research community.
  • Articulate and promote the strategic vision of the Division of Research.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or relevant combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of related experience in research administration and compliance.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience with significant staff supervision.
  • Expertise in university, academic medical center, and/or industry research administration.
  • Understanding of Federal funding agencies and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to work across organizational units to develop appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Experience in developing and sharing key metrics about the research enterprise.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Deep competence in developing budgets and forecasts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing sponsored projects and IRB and IACUC administration.
  • Proven track record in achieving organizational efficiencies in research administration.
