About the position

The Assistive Technology Specialist (ATS) at the University of New Hampshire will play a crucial role in developing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating assistive technology services tailored for students with disabilities. This position is integral to ensuring that students have access to the necessary technology and accommodations that facilitate their academic success. The ATS will engage in a comprehensive needs assessment process with students, creating personalized plans that address their specific technology and accessibility requirements. This includes the use of text-to-speech readers, screen readers, and various accessibility accommodations such as alternative text and captions. The ATS will also manage the available technology resources, both hardware and software, to support these initiatives. In addition to working directly with students, the ATS will provide essential support to faculty and staff at UNH. This involves assisting in the implementation of technology and accessibility accommodations, ensuring that faculty are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to create accessible learning environments. The ATS will develop faculty resources and provide one-on-one support to facilitate the successful integration of accommodations into the classroom. Furthermore, the ATS will oversee the processes related to the creation of accessible materials, including the acquisition and production of accessible format texts, captions, transcriptions, and other media. This role requires effective collaboration with campus partners to advocate for a more inclusive and accessible university environment, promoting Universal Design and best practices in accessibility. The ATS will also assist the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) team in various capacities, including technology purchasing and ensuring that the office has the necessary tools to implement best practices related to accessibility. This position is vital in fostering an environment that values diversity and inclusiveness, ensuring that all students have equal access to educational opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the primary accommodation specialist for students with technology and accessibility specific needs.
  • Engages students in a needs assessment process to create personalized plans related to technology use and accessibility accommodations.
  • Assists with the implementation of student plans involving technology and accessibility.
  • Manages available student technology (hardware and software).
  • Provides direct assistance to UNH faculty and staff related to technology and accessibility accommodations.
  • Creates faculty resources to guide successful implementation of student accommodations and accessible learning environments.
  • Manages processes related to the creation of accessible materials, including acquisition and creation of accessible format texts, captions, and transcriptions.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to advocate for a more accessible and inclusive UNH.
  • Creates materials and attends campus partner meetings to support Universal Design and accessibility best practices.
  • Assists the SAS team with technology purchasing and ensuring best practices related to accessibility.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Computer Information Services, Educational Technology, Special Education or related discipline, and two years of experience working with students with disabilities, or Bachelor's degree and four years experience.
  • Experience with current technology including Read&Write, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Mac & PC Platforms, JAWS, TextHelp, Zoomtext, OCR, BrailleNote, remote captioning, and Canvas.
  • Experience supporting college students with assistive technology.
  • Experience reviewing clinical documentation to determine assistive technology needs and use by students.
  • Familiarity with Braille production, Braille translation software, and maintenance of Braille embossers.
  • Ability to manage numerous complex assignments and meet required deadlines.
  • Experience with Office 365 products.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility and usability standards including WCAG 2.0.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding disability access and compliance, including Section 508 of the ADA.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
