About the position

As a key member of the Accounting Services Department at PSEG Long Island, the Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of the company. Reporting directly to the General Accounting Manager, the selected candidate will be expected to demonstrate a high level of motivation and analytical thinking. This position requires the ability to navigate complex accounting problems and reach justifiable conclusions that support the team’s objectives. The Accountant will utilize hands-on accounting experience and a thorough understanding of US GAAP and regulatory accounting principles to provide essential support in meeting business goals and objectives. Given the dynamic nature of the role, multitasking abilities will be beneficial as the Accountant will be required to wear different job hats on a day-to-day basis. The Accountant will assist in the monthly financial closing processes, ensuring that all journal entries are recorded with appropriate supporting documentation. This role involves performing reconciliations with detailed explanations and supporting documentation, as well as preparing and reviewing SAP financial statements. The Accountant will be responsible for identifying and correcting errors related to master data, data processing, and reporting. Additionally, the role includes developing and maintaining analytical tools, spreadsheets, and databases to ensure the integrity of financial data and enhance the overall use of the FI and FERC modules. In this position, the Accountant will also assist in the identification, development, and implementation of enhancements to the SAP financial system to meet business needs. This includes reviewing and evaluating new and existing accounting policies for their application. The Accountant will prepare detailed financial data schedules for interim and annual external audits, research data sources for relevant financial information, and promote best practices by standardizing control checks and reporting to ensure compliance with PSEG-LI policies, US GAAP, and regulatory requirements. The role also involves supporting property tax processes, participating in ad hoc projects, and maintaining confidentiality of organizational information. Continuous professional development is encouraged, and the Accountant will be expected to stay updated with financial regulatory developments to optimize best practices for PSEG-LI.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the monthly financial closing processes.
  • Record journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Perform reconciliations with explanations and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and review SAP financial statements, identifying and correcting errors.
  • Develop and maintain analytical and processing tools, spreadsheets, and databases for financial data integrity.
  • Assist in the identification, development, and implementation of enhancements to the SAP financial system.
  • Review classification of balance sheet and income statement in the general ledger report and prepare necessary adjustments according to GAAP.
  • Assist with various audit tasks, providing support and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Ensure the integrity of the books and records of the company.
  • Respond to and resolve issues and requests from other business areas regarding accounting issues and reports.
  • Research open accounting issues and recognize potential issues for corrective actions.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders to support the implementation of accounting policies and processes.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate financial data schedules for audits.
  • Research data sources and select relevant financial information for analysis.
  • Promote and implement procedural best practices by standardizing control checks and reporting.
  • Support Property Tax with processing invoices, reporting, and analysis.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects and assist other areas within Finance as needed.
  • Protect the organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and maintaining professional networks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting or a relevant financial field.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of accounting and finance principles and practices under US GAAP.
