About the position

As an Associate Application Engineer at Discover, you will embark on a journey of meaningful work from Day 1. In this role, you will be responsible for building and releasing reliable software systems at scale. You will partner with enterprise-wide teams to develop and maintain full stack solutions that align with our business needs. Your holistic view of all products and their interactions will enable you to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem. You will independently innovate and advocate for best practices, solving complex problems and guiding the team on implementing solutions from inception to production. Additionally, you will actively manage and escalate risk and customer-impacting issues within your day-to-day role to management. This position requires a commitment to learning fundamental programming techniques, observing and reacting to failures and quality issues, and participating in agile practices and ceremonies, including behavior-driven development. You will also learn to use the environment and tools preferred by the organization, ensuring that you are well-equipped to contribute effectively to the team.

Responsibilities

  • Learns fundamental programming techniques including structure, testing, and automation
  • Observes and reacts to failures and quality issues, emits log entries, and helps mitigate security threats using defensive coding
  • Works at the tasks and/or user stories level
  • Participates in agile practices and ceremonies including behavior driven development
  • Learns to use the environment and tools preferred by the organization

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology or related field
  • In lieu of education, 6 Continuous Months of Relevant Discover Engineering Training

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes/Openshift) and cloud providers like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform or others
  • Knowledge of key technologies to be leveraged by the team including Java, Python / PySpark, Spark, CI/CD technologies
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning Platforms and Data Science Technologies
  • Understanding of software testing principles and methodologies
