About the position

The Associate Athletic Communications Director at American University plays a crucial role in publicizing the university's 16 intercollegiate athletic teams. This position involves writing, editing, and publishing content across various external athletic channels, both in print and digital formats, under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications & Digital Media. The role requires a strong focus on media relations, content creation, and managing digital platforms to enhance the visibility and branding of the athletic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit external athletic messaging for accurate public and media communication.
  • Prepare and provide pre- and postgame information on the athletics website and social media accounts.
  • Serve as the primary media relations contact for designated sports teams.
  • Edit and maintain record books, produce game notes packages, and write feature stories for the AU website.
  • Manage all digital platforms for assigned teams, ensuring comprehensive coverage of events.
  • Produce and edit team video highlights and organize photo galleries.
  • Monitor social media trends to keep platforms updated and relevant.
  • Manage event staff and compile statistics at assigned events for accurate media reporting.
  • Supervise and train interns and part-time employees.
  • Maintain office organization and ensure smooth game-day media operations.
  • Develop creative solutions to promote and market athletic programs through various media channels.
  • Cultivate media relationships and develop original story ideas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in sports information and game statistics programs.
  • Extensive experience in producing and editing video content for web and social media.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong experience in social media, video, broadcast, and photography.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
