The Associate Athletic Communications Director at American University plays a crucial role in publicizing the university's 16 intercollegiate athletic teams. This position involves writing, editing, and publishing content across various external athletic channels, both in print and digital formats. The role requires collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications & Digital Media and includes managing media relations, overseeing interns, and ensuring comprehensive coverage of athletic events.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Assistant Athletic Director in publicizing athletic teams.
  • Write and edit external athletic messaging for public and media dissemination.
  • Prepare pre- and postgame information for the athletics website and social media.
  • Serve as the primary media relations contact for specific sports teams.
  • Edit and maintain record books and produce game notes packages.
  • Write feature previews, recaps, and stories for the AU website.
  • Manage digital platforms for designated teams, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
  • Produce and edit team video highlights and organize photo galleries.
  • Monitor social media trends to keep platforms updated.
  • Manage event staff and compile statistics at assigned events.
  • Supervise and train interns and part-time employees.
  • Maintain office organization for smooth operations and game-day media relations.
  • Develop promotional ideas for branding and marketing programs through media channels.
  • Cultivate media relationships and develop original story ideas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in sports information and game statistics programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of video content production and editing for web and social media.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, and Microsoft Programs.
  • Strong experience in social media, video, broadcast, and photography.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing social media accounts for sports teams.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations regarding media relations.
