About the position

The Associate Athletic Director of Strategic Communications at Radford University will play a pivotal role in shaping and managing the communications strategy for the Athletics Department. This position is tasked with developing, integrating, and implementing a comprehensive external and internal communications strategy that aligns with the department's mission. The successful candidate will oversee the Athletics Communications Office and Video Production Office, managing budgets and supervising full-time and part-time employees, student assistants, and interns. In addition to operational oversight, the Associate Athletic Director will serve as a liaison to local and national media, enhancing brand visibility through the creation and distribution of press releases and publications. The role also involves managing the content on RadfordAthletics.com and engaging with audiences through social media platforms. The Associate Athletic Director will be a key member of the Athletics Department's senior leadership team, contributing to the development and implementation of strategies and objectives to meet departmental goals. Furthermore, this position will act as the department spokesperson and provide media relations advice to the Athletic Director. Additional duties and special projects may be assigned by the Athletic Director or their designee.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a strategic communications strategy for the Athletics Department.
  • Oversee the operations of the Athletics Communications Office and Video Production Office.
  • Manage associated budgets and supervise full and part-time employees, student assistants, and interns.
  • Serve as a liaison to local and national media.
  • Enhance brand visibility through writing and distributing press releases and publications.
  • Manage all information on RadfordAthletics.com and create content for social media platforms.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of departmental strategies and objectives as part of the senior leadership team.
  • Act as the department spokesperson and advise the Athletic Director on media relations matters.
  • Accept additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in communications, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated writing skills and professional experience in sports writing, sports copy editing, proofreading, or desktop publishing.
  • Experience in a university sports information office or similar setting.
  • Accuracy in writing, editing, and proofreading.
  • Experience with in-game statistical software (Stat Crew).
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, and QuarkXPress or other desktop publishing programs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with internal and external constituents.
