About the position

The Associate Athletic Director of Finance & Administration at Dartmouth College is responsible for overseeing the financial operations related to the Athletics department. This role involves supporting strategic financial decision-making through comprehensive financial reporting and budget analysis. The position requires collaboration with various departments and stakeholders to improve financial processes and implement initiatives that enhance the overall financial management of the Athletics program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed budget preparation for the department ensuring accuracy and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Participate in high-level budget discussions with administrative staff, providing expert guidance and recommendations.
  • Serve as a trusted source for administrators, coaches, and staff, providing budgetary expertise and counsel.
  • Analyze revenue and expense drivers, identify variances, and provide supporting variance analysis and financial reporting.
  • Assist in determining projections of operating results for future periods, considering ongoing and planned operating activities, available funding, and anticipated fluctuations in funding.
  • Prepare and administer operating budget reports on a monthly basis, ensuring timely and accurate reconciliation of expenses and revenues.
  • Collaborate with the department administrator to formulate departmental fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Transfer revenue from joint friend's accounts to individual friend's accounts, ensuring accurate and timely recording.
  • Perform in-depth research, organizing and analysis of the year-end projection reports.
  • Summarize data and analytical findings to support senior leadership decision-making, using creative and effective presentation tools.
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasts, trend analyses, and historical data compilations, providing insights to inform strategic decisions.
  • Prepare accounting reports for special events, such as tournaments and meets, and analyze results to measure performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Produce annual reports to measure progress, cost-effectiveness, and results, and prepare ad-hoc reports as requested.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to business associates, interpreting and analyzing their questions and providing research recommendations.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Finance office and department, resolving issues, coordinating efforts, and ensuring effective communication.
  • Advise and monitor the appropriate use of funding sources, restrictions, and account coding, ensuring compliance with organizational policies.
  • Collaborate with the Finance office and Administration to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Guide end-users on the use of the Chart of Accounts, ensuring accurate and compliant financial recording.
  • Participate in the billing process, reviewing rate documentation, billing estimates, customer invoices, and providing detailed information to customers.
  • Represent the department on College-wide committees and working groups, as requested or assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in Excel, including pivot tables, v-lookups, and formulas.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of fiscal policies and processes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting administration.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with different stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification.
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
