About the position

The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff (AC CoS) serves as a strategic advisor to the Chancellor, providing counsel on sensitive issues and leading initiatives that impact the university. This role involves representing the Chancellor in high-stakes meetings, advising senior management, and managing the operations of the Chancellor's office. The AC CoS is responsible for fostering relationships with various stakeholders and ensuring effective communication and strategic planning within the university's leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as strategic advisor and change agent for the Chancellor, providing counsel and expertise.
  • Represent the Chancellor in sensitive meetings and working groups with diverse stakeholders.
  • Partner with Government & Community Relations to support the Chancellor's engagement with government and community groups.
  • Stay informed on higher education issues to provide broad perspective to the Chancellor.
  • Advise senior management on strategic decisions impacting the organization.
  • Lead the development and implementation of key initiatives on behalf of the Chancellor.
  • Manage staffing and preparation for the Chancellor's meetings, ensuring follow-up on action items.
  • Communicate on the Chancellor's behalf with various constituents, facilitating sensitive communications.
  • Identify major constituencies and coordinate Chancellor engagement plans across stakeholders.
  • Ensure engagement of key leadership and advisory bodies in meetings and initiatives.
  • Triage issues in the immediate office, providing strategic updates to the Chancellor.
  • Manage operations and facilities of University House and California Hall.
  • Direct administrative operations, planning, and budget of the immediate office.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in executive advising and strategic planning within higher education or similar environments.
  • Strong understanding of higher education issues and the political landscape.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in managing teams and initiatives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with government and community relations.
  • Familiarity with compliance and risk management in an academic setting.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
