About the position

The Associate Chemical Engineering position at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory offers an entry-level opportunity to work with a multi-disciplined team of engineers and scientists. The role focuses on supporting, evaluating, and implementing chemistry analysis equipment for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. The position emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and the application of analytical chemistry in a naval context.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) chemistry equipment for potential shipboard application.
  • Support currently deployed chemistry analysis equipment by designing tests and qualifying new hardware and writing technical manual procedures.
  • Resolve issues with fleet chemicals, chemical analysis methods, and chemistry equipment.
  • Research and develop new chemistry analysis methods and techniques to modernize existing shipboard analysis methods.
  • Conduct hands-on chemistry laboratory work, data evaluation, and author technical and cost/benefit engineering evaluations and recommendation reports.
  • Efficiently manage multiple tasks concurrently and respond to changes in task assignments and priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field.
  • Analytical chemistry knowledge and skills.
  • Laboratory experience, preferably in chemistry or chemical engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Chemistry or chemical engineering laboratory experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale in core engineering/science courses.
  • Experience with COTS analytical chemistry equipment including autotitration, ion selective electrodes, and spectrophotometers.
