About the position

The Associate Chemist & Chemical Engineer position at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory offers a unique opportunity for candidates seeking autonomy and significant responsibility in their careers. This role includes an approximate 1-2 year assignment at either the Knolls (NY) or Bettis (PA) Laboratory, followed by a transition into NNL's Field Engineering Program for a subsequent 3-5 year assignment in a Shipyard. The initial laboratory assignment is designed to provide candidates with hands-on experience in NNL's fleet support engineering community, which encompasses reactor plant engineering support for aircraft carrier and submarine platforms throughout their life cycles. This includes new construction, reactor servicing, maintenance availabilities, and emergent problem resolution. Candidates will be expected to relocate to the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory for about two years before moving on to training and relocation to a shipyard. As part of the role, the selected candidate will serve as an on-site representative of NNL and component supply organizations in shipyards, providing engineering support and independent oversight of work related to the installation, servicing, testing, and modification of reactor plant systems, components, and safety systems. RPCO engineers are engaged during nuclear work and operations, applying sound engineering principles and judgment to influence and provide feedback to on-site management and partner organizations. Successful completion of a job-specific qualification is required, with training expected to take approximately one year, depending on prior experience. Upon qualification, the prospective RPCO engineer must demonstrate a solid understanding of requirements and the ability to function effectively in a technical support and oversight capacity in a field location.
