About the position

The Associate Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Cook County Health (CCH) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity of the accounting and financial reporting functions. This position is responsible for overseeing a fiscal responsibility of over $3.95 billion, which includes the supervision and leadership of several professional finance managers and staff. The Associate CFO is tasked with maintaining and interfacing related accounting and reporting systems while ensuring that adequate internal controls are in place. This role requires a deep understanding of financial management within a healthcare setting, as well as the ability to navigate complex financial landscapes and regulatory environments. In addition to the core responsibilities of financial oversight, the Associate CFO serves as an advisor to the Chief Financial Officer and senior leadership across administrative, clinical, and operational teams. This position directs the accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and financial reporting functions, ensuring that the core financial systems are maintained and properly interfaced with the general ledger. The Associate CFO is also responsible for monitoring and enhancing internal controls, ensuring timely closing of the general ledger, and providing related financial reports in a timely manner. The role involves coordinating the annual financial audit and proactively addressing any accounting-related issues. Collaboration is key, as the Associate CFO works closely with the Chief Revenue Officer and staff to ensure proper revenue recognition and accounting of accounts receivable. Additionally, this position collaborates with the Budget/FP&A function to prepare the annual budget and five-year financial forecasts, as well as assesses the financial impact of major governmental policy and regulatory changes. The Associate CFO prepares financial and management reports of health system hospital revenue and expenditures and performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an advisor to the Chief Financial Officer and senior leadership of administrative, clinical, and operating teams.
  • Direct the CCH accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and financial reporting functions.
  • Maintain core financial systems and ensure proper interface into the general ledger.
  • Monitor and enhance internal controls.
  • Ensure timely closing of the general ledger and provide related financial reports timely.
  • Responsible for proper accounting and reporting of all transactions and accruals that impact the general ledger and financial reports.
  • Coordinate and ensure successful outcomes of the annual financial audit.
  • Proactively respond to and communicate any accounting-related issues and concerns.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Revenue Officer and staff for proper revenue recognition and accounting of accounts receivable.
  • Work with the Budget/FP&A function to prepare the annual budget and five-year financial forecasts.
  • Assess financial impact of major policy, fiscal, strategic, and operational issues or changes as requested.
  • Prepare reports and data request responses for internal customers and various government agencies.
  • Prepare financial and management reports of health system hospital revenue and expenditures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher-level degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Ten (10) years of work experience in finance or accounting.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience in finance or accounting in a healthcare setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related fields from accredited institutions.
  • CPA, HFMA Certification, and/or ACHE Accreditation.
  • Ten (10) years total healthcare accounting experience.
  • Five (5) years total supervisory experience in a budgetary and/or financial planning capacity with a hospital or healthcare setting.
