About the position

The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics, Palliative and Extended Care (ACOS, GPEC) at the San Francisco VA Health Care System is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the administrative and operational activities of the Geriatrics, Palliative and Extended Care Service. This position involves managing various clinical programs, ensuring high standards of care, and providing direct patient care as needed. The ACOS, GPEC reports directly to the Chief of Staff and plays a crucial role in program development and staff management within a complex healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and direct administrative and operational activities for the Geriatrics, Palliative and Extended Care Service.
  • Oversee all GPEC clinical programs, including inpatient Mobile ACE program and geriatrics consult service.
  • Manage medical and recreational therapy care in the Community Living Center (CLC).
  • Supervise a dedicated hospice unit in the CLC and Home-Based Primary Care program.
  • Lead inpatient palliative care consult service and outpatient palliative care clinic.
  • Coordinate outpatient primary and consultative geriatrics clinics.
  • Provide oversight for non-institutional care components such as Adult Day Healthcare and Homemaker Health Aide services.
  • Establish and maintain high standards of excellence in all areas of GPEC service.
  • Champion performance measures including wait times and outpatient satisfaction.
  • Recruit and retain faculty and staff, initiating programmatic development.
  • Maintain a clinical workload by providing direct patient care as needed.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, or other doctoral-level academic with board-certification.
  • Minimum of three years demonstrated successful executive leadership/management experience in a complex healthcare setting.
  • Experience working within the VA health care system is preferred.
  • Skill and creativity in organization, management, leadership, and interpersonal relations.
  • Broad-based knowledge of VA policies and procedures and Joint Commission standards.
  • Ongoing awareness of health care issues and trends.

  • Experience in geriatrics and palliative care settings.
  • Familiarity with telemedicine practices.
