About the position

The Associate Civil Engineer at SJW Corp plays a crucial role in the design, construction, and project management of various water facilities. This position is under general direction and involves complex professional civil and mechanical engineering work related to the development of new and replacement wells, chemical and potable water storage tanks, pressure regulating stations, booster pump stations, water treatment and disinfection facilities, pipelines, and special projects such as alternative energy initiatives, tenant improvements, landscaping, and paving. The Associate Civil Engineer will also be responsible for coordinating projects with various engineering groups and staff assigned to these projects, ensuring that all aspects of the work are aligned with the company's standards and regulations. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, capable of successfully completing projects and developing in-house design packages as the engineer of record. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of civil and mechanical engineering principles as they apply to water supply distribution, treatment, and operation. The Associate Civil Engineer will prepare plans and specifications for construction projects, stamp and sign design drawings, and prepare bid documents while monitoring design costs and overall project budgets. Additionally, the position involves coordinating with other company groups and outside consultants, obtaining necessary permits, performing field investigations, and maintaining thorough documentation throughout the project lifecycle. The Associate Civil Engineer will work under general supervision and may be assigned specific projects with minimal oversight, making it essential for the candidate to possess excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to conduct independent research and make sound engineering decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares plans and specifications for construction of projects for potable water production, transmission, distribution, storage and treatment, including pipeline and service connection design.
  • Stamps and signs design drawings as the engineer of record.
  • Prepares bid documents, monitors design costs and overall project budget, and provides support services during construction.
  • Coordinates work with other Company groups such as Survey, Operations, Electrical, Water Treatment, Water Quality, Properties and Permits, Planning, Pipelines, Accounting, Regulatory, Logistics and Procurement, Environmental Health and Safety and GIS.
  • Coordinates with outside consultants and contractors in the planning, design and construction of potable water and treatment facilities.
  • Obtains all necessary permits with local jurisdictions and assists in getting permits from state and federal agencies.
  • Performs field investigation, construction observation and inspection.
  • Assists contractors, general public and governmental agencies with questions relating to potable water systems.
  • Updates Company standards and drawings.
  • Maintains documentation including correspondence, meeting minutes, request for information and submittal review.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Valid Registration in the State of California as a Professional Engineer (PE) with the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists (BPELSG).
  • Valid California driver license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of civil and mechanical engineering as applied to water supply distribution, treatment and operation.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation or equivalent drafting software, Adobe or Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Fundamentals of mathematics and physics related to water facilities design.
  • Construction methods, materials and specifications. Ability to create new construction specifications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct independent research and make prompt and sound engineering decisions.
  • Pertinent regulations related to the design and construction of water facilities and structures.
  • Operational and maintenance procedures utilized in potable water and treatment systems.
  • Principles of surveying.
  • OSHA safety design standards or requirements.
