About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Consultant, Civil Engineer for our Raleigh, NC office. This role involves engaging in complex projects with our Transportation Team and being part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. The Associate Consultant will provide technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in both the public and private sectors. Responsibilities may include assisting with research, data gathering, concept development, planning, and design of roads and site improvements. The role requires generating accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding materials, installations, and construction specifications, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. The impact of this position includes collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from various sources such as physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, and geotechnical data for project development, design, and construction. The Associate Consultant will perform professional civil engineering work and assist with conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure compliance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits. This role may involve working individually or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installations, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos. Additionally, the Associate Consultant will verify site characteristics, provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues, research historical property land uses, prepare data visualizations, maintain quality control standards, assist with project development and scoping, contribute to technical reports and presentations, conduct engineering studies and surveys, assist in data analysis and interpretation, and prepare site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). The role requires collaboration with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on federally, state, regionally, and locally funded improvement and development projects. The Associate Consultant is expected to exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from various sources for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional civil engineering work and assist with conducting research and inspections of site conditions and resources.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work and ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Research historical property land uses and prepare data visualizations for interpretation and presentation.
  • Maintain quality control standards for accurate measurements and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations explaining research findings.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gather information on design and construction issues.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data obtained during field investigations.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Collaborate with engineers and planners on federally, state, and locally funded projects.
  • Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and design/build processes.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of processes for reducing hazardous substances and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Familiarity with civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail and results orientation.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, and design software.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge effectively.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with health and safety policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.
