About the position

The Associate Project Accountant will provide professional accounting and financial support to project teams at WSP, ensuring accurate project financial management and compliance with contract requirements. This role involves managing project costs, budgets, and invoicing, while collaborating with project managers to deliver high-quality financial documentation and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue.
  • Ensure accurate project profit and loss calculations and budget vs. actual cost assessments.
  • Responsible for lifecycle project accounting, including creating project accounts in Oracle and tracking project budgets.
  • Perform detailed accounting tasks related to managing project contract revenue and billing events.
  • Partner with the Project Manager to establish and update project budgets as needed.
  • Generate project financial reports and escalate issues to the Project Manager as necessary.
  • Authorize access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in compliance with accounting practices.
  • Maintain quality control standards for generating accurate project-related financial records.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Verify contract and change order characteristics and ensure draft invoices are accurate.
  • Manage subcontractor invoicing and payment requests with Accounts Payable.
  • Identify and record unpaid contract billings and follow up on delinquent accounts receivable.
  • Respond to client requests for project expense details and review project-related billings.
  • Attend project-related meetings to inform the team about project financial status and actions needed.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects.
  • Compile information for internal and external auditors as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely-related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience in accounting and project contracts.
  • Knowledge of project accounting principles and practices.
  • Developing analytical mindset with sound independent judgment.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Self-leadership with attention to detail and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in technical writing, office automation, and accounting software, especially MS Excel.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze data and reach conclusions.
  • Awareness of WSP USA's Project Delivery Handbook.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to company policies.
