About the position

The Associate Project Accountant will provide professional accounting and financial support to project teams at WSP, ensuring accurate project charges, maintaining budgets, and generating financial reports. This role involves managing project costs and revenue, validating invoicing, and ensuring compliance with contracts, all while supporting the delivery of future-ready solutions to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue.
  • Ensure accurate project profit and loss calculations and budget vs. actual cost evaluations.
  • Responsible for lifecycle project accounting from creating project accounts to project close-out.
  • Perform detailed accounting tasks related to managing project contract revenue and billing events.
  • Partner with Project Managers to establish and update project budgets as needed.
  • Generate project financial reports and escalate issues to Project Managers as necessary.
  • Authorize access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in compliance with accounting practices.
  • Maintain quality control standards for generating accurate project-related financial records.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Verify contract and change order characteristics and ensure draft invoices are accurate.
  • Manage subcontractor coordination and evaluate invoice submittals for accuracy.
  • Identify and record unpaid contract billings and follow up on delinquent accounts receivable.
  • Respond to client requests for project expense details and review project-related billings.
  • Attend project-related meetings to inform the team about project financials and follow up on actions discussed.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects.
  • Compile information for review by senior consultants prior to audits.
  • Remain current in project accounting principles and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely-related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience in accounting and project contracts.
  • Knowledge of project accounting principles and their application to project work-related issues.
  • Developing analytical mindset with sound independent judgment in financial decision-making.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proficient in technical writing, office automation, accounting software, and MS Excel.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for effective data analysis and solutions.
  • Awareness of WSP USA's Project Delivery Handbook and adherence to workplace safety policies.
