About the position

The Associate Director of the Biomolecular Interactions Group at AstraZeneca will lead efforts in evaluating biomolecular interactions using advanced biochemical and biophysical methods, focusing on biosensor-based technologies. This role is crucial for the rapid characterization of outputs from various monoclonal antibody discovery streams and the advancement of biotherapeutics through the pipeline. The successful candidate will mentor a team of scientists and collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize workflows and contribute to the development of innovative biotherapeutics.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design and execution of high-throughput biologics characterization assays and workflows using biosensor-based techniques such as SPR and BLI.
  • Lead a team of scientists supporting pipeline projects and technology development, providing technical oversight and strategic guidance.
  • Develop automated high-throughput protocols for experiments and data capture workflows.
  • Collaborate with the Protein Analytics and Developability team to optimize and automate workflows for biologics screening and characterization.
  • Conduct structure/function analyses for biologics optimization using molecular modeling and experimental techniques.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in biosensor-based technologies and support critical decision-making in project teams.
  • Maximize productivity and streamline processes by integrating new technologies into Protein Analytics and Developability capabilities.
  • Contribute to the preparation of IP filings and regulatory submissions.
  • Represent the company at scientific conferences and engage with external partners.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bio/Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 8+ years of post-PhD research experience, or MS with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Deep expertise in high-throughput biomolecular interaction analysis of biologics using biosensor-based platforms such as Biacore, Carterra, and Octet.
  • Ability to design, perform, analyze, and troubleshoot various SPR-based assays.
  • Extensive experience in high-throughput screening, liquid handling robotics, and laboratory automation.
  • Fundamental understanding of quality control and analytical techniques parameters.
  • Knowledge of additional protein analytics techniques including SEC-MALS, DLS, LC-MS, and others.
  • Experience with protein structure and modeling software, including X-ray crystallography and SAXS.
  • Experience working with Genedata Biologics.
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop a team of scientists.
  • Advanced presentation skills to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
