About the position

The Associate Director, Editorial Content, plays a crucial role in supporting the Division's mission to raise over $400 million annually through effective communication strategies. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of major donor publications, ensuring that the content is compelling, consistent, and aligned with the Division's financial goals. The role involves managing the production of various publications, including the Impact magazine, which is published quarterly, and the annual Your Impact in Action digital 1-pager. The Associate Director will collaborate closely with fundraising units to ensure accurate representation of donor contributions and will be the primary editor for the donor magazine, overseeing a team of writers and ensuring high-quality storytelling that resonates with the audience. In addition to managing print publications, the Associate Director will also oversee the digital presence of the Division's communications, including the Impact website. This includes maintaining the editorial calendar, formatting content for digital platforms, and coordinating with design and production teams to ensure timely publication. The role requires a strong understanding of both print and digital media, as well as the ability to translate complex scientific information into accessible content for a lay audience. The onboarding process for this position includes comprehensive training, shadowing colleagues, and hands-on learning experiences throughout the first year. This position is remote with minimal onsite requirements, and candidates must reside in New England to comply with DFCI guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of major donor publications, including Impact magazine and Your Impact in Action digital 1-pager.
  • Serve as the editor for the donor magazine, managing the editorial calendar and production schedule.
  • Collaborate with fundraising units to ensure accurate coverage of donors in publications.
  • Manage the contributions of approximately 20 writers per issue, including training and overseeing their progress.
  • Liaise with Senior Leadership on high-level components of the magazine, including special features and tributes.
  • Research and write stories, including interviews with high-level donors and senior faculty.
  • Review and edit stories assigned to other writers for accuracy and tone.
  • Work with design and production teams to ensure timely publication of each issue.
  • Maintain the Impact website, ensuring timely updates and content management.
  • Develop annual and midcourse budget projections for publications.
  • Ensure inclusion, diversity, and equity are reflected in all donor publications.
  • Support the Assistant VP, Philanthropy Communications, in campaign communications efforts.
  • Compile and manage a central repository of compelling content for the Division.
  • Monitor resources for announcements and compelling stories related to Dana-Farber patients and donors.
  • Devise processes to efficiently capture and share content across the Division.
  • Manage the use of U.S. News and World Report "Best Hospitals" badges and ensure proper approvals.
  • Review all stories for the Jimmy Fund blog for tone and accuracy.
  • Collaborate on high-level writing assignments, such as Division-wide brochures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
  • Six to eight years of experience in print and online publication writing and production.
  • Previous publications manager experience required.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a solid understanding of design principles.
  • Experience motivating staff and managing complex projects.
  • Strong command of AP style guidelines.
  • Experience in print production and marketing operations.
  • Ability to translate scientific or technical information for a lay audience.
  • Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking abilities.

Nice-to-haves
