About the position

The Associate Director, Editorial Content, plays a crucial role in the Philanthropy Marketing & Communications Division at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of major donor publications, which are essential for raising over $400 million annually. The Associate Director will manage the creation, compilation, and deployment of compelling content across various platforms, ensuring that messaging is consistent and impactful. The role requires a strong commitment to the Institute's core values of Impact, Excellence, Compassion & Respect, and Discovery, and involves collaboration across the organization to enhance the overall effectiveness of fundraising efforts. The Associate Director will serve as the primary editor for the Division's donor publications, including the quarterly Impact magazine, and will be responsible for managing the editorial calendar, soliciting story ideas, and collaborating with fundraising units to ensure accurate donor coverage. This position also involves overseeing a team of writers, providing training, and ensuring high-quality content production. The Associate Director will work closely with senior leadership to incorporate high-level components into publications and will be tasked with researching and writing stories that highlight the contributions of donors and faculty. In addition to managing print publications, the Associate Director will oversee the digital presence of the Impact magazine, ensuring timely updates and effective communication through the website and email announcements. The role requires a strategic approach to content management, including the development of processes to capture and share compelling stories that reflect the impact of donor generosity. The Associate Director will also be responsible for maintaining the Division's editorial Style Guide and ensuring that all publications reflect the Institute's commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity. This position is remote with occasional on-site requirements, and the onboarding process includes comprehensive training and hands-on learning experiences. The Associate Director will report to the Assistant Vice President of Philanthropy Communications and will have one direct report, the Senior Writer. The role is designed for a self-starter who can work independently while collaborating with various stakeholders throughout the Institute.

Responsibilities

  • Primary owner and executor of all aspects of the Division's donor publications, including Impact magazine (print and digital) and other publications/content as needed.
  • Serve as editor of donor magazine, Impact (4x per year), managing the editorial calendar and production schedule.
  • Solicit and evaluate story ideas, collaborating with fundraising units for accurate donor coverage.
  • Oversee the activities of the Senior Writer in managing contributions from approximately 20 writers per issue, including training and assigning stories.
  • Liaise with Senior Leadership on high-level components of the magazine, including special features and tributes.
  • Research and write stories, including interviews with high-level donors and senior faculty.
  • Review and edit stories assigned to other writers, ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Secure donor photography and logos for publications.
  • Work with Design and Production teams to ensure timely and cost-effective design, approval, printing, and mailing of each issue.
  • Maintain the digital production and announcement calendar for the Impact website, DanaFarberImpact.org (4x/year).
  • Re-format all magazine copy for digital upload and oversee the upload of all content to WordPress.
  • Manage email announcement and web rollouts, writing and circulating email copy, and testing and approving emails.
  • Develop annual and midcourse budget projections for publications.
  • Ensure that inclusion, diversity, and equity are reflected in all donor publications.
  • Support the Assistant VP, Philanthropy Communications, by acting as a content expert on campaign priorities and assisting in campaign communications efforts.
  • Compile, create, and manage a central repository of compelling content for use across the Division.
  • Monitor resources for announcements/news of breakthroughs and compelling stories of Dana-Farber patients.
  • Devise processes to efficiently capture all elements of content, including interviews and photography.
  • Actively seek ways to leverage content online to enhance audience engagement and increase online revenue.
  • Own and manage the use of U.S. News and World Report 'Best Hospitals' badges, obtaining required approvals.
  • Review all stories for the Jimmy Fund blog for tone and accuracy.
  • Select and supply news items for JimmyFund.org and coordinate annual updates to the Major Mailing Specification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, or related field required.
  • Six to eight years of experience with all aspects of print and online publication writing and production.
  • Previous publications manager experience required.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a solid understanding of design principles.
  • Experience motivating staff and managing complex projects.
  • Strong command of AP style guidelines.
  • Experience in print production and marketing operations.
  • Ability to translate scientific or technical information for a lay audience.
  • Exceptional organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
