About the position

The Associate Director for Finance and Research Administration in the Physics Department at Harvard University is responsible for overseeing financial planning, research administration, and financial operations. This role involves providing strategic financial guidance, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with regulations, and leading a team of financial professionals. The position requires collaboration with faculty and senior management to support departmental goals and enhance financial performance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and guidance on research and department finance, compliance, and fiscal matters.
  • Direct all financial planning and analysis efforts, including budget coordination and financial projections.
  • Create annual financial reports and ad hoc reports to support decision-making.
  • Oversee research administration for Physics faculty, ensuring compliance with regulations and timely financial reporting.
  • Manage financial operations, including procurement, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures regarding finance and research administration.
  • Supervise and mentor the finance team, including the Assistant Director for Research Administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 8 years' relevant work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of sponsored research regulations.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • MBA or Master's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and advanced Excel skills is necessary.
  • Excellent communication, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a higher education environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with financial systems and reporting tools is beneficial.
