About the position

The Talent Acquisition department at Howard University is dedicated to hiring qualified candidates who contribute to the overall strategic success of the institution. The Associate Director, Strategic HR Business Partnerships, will play a pivotal role in developing and managing strategic business partnerships that align with the university's objectives. This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President of People Strategies & Planning and is crucial for supporting the effective execution of human resources' strategic priorities. The associate director will supervise the university's Strategic Business Partners, ensuring that they implement organizational plans that support retention, culture, diversity, and inclusion. In this role, the associate director will maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to employee management, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance. They will serve as the Human Resources liaison during departmental workforce planning and will implement and ensure compliance with policies outlined in the employee handbook. The associate director will also provide guidance and support to business units to foster a consistent and fair work environment. The position requires the ability to analyze human resource and workforce trends, identify strategic opportunities and risks, and prepare business cases and proposals for key university stakeholders. The associate director will monitor and evaluate partnership performance, providing regular updates and recommendations for optimization. They will also be responsible for implementing comprehensive change management strategies that align with the university's goals, assessing the impact of changes, and planning communication and training initiatives to support transitions. Overall, this role is integral to promoting a positive employee experience and refining risk management within the university.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage strategic business partnerships that align with university objectives.
  • Supervise the university's Strategic Business Partners in implementing organizational plans.
  • Maintain knowledge of legal requirements related to employee management and ensure compliance.
  • Serve as the HR liaison during departmental workforce planning.
  • Implement and ensure compliance with policies outlined in the employee handbook.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business management, business administration, or a related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of human resources experience, with at least five years in a consulting or HR Business Partner role.
  • Management experience desired.
  • Strong analytical skills to analyze complex information and make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as Workday, PeopleSoft, or SAP.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven relationship building and liaison expertise.
  • Strong technical, communication, strategic thinking, and leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Higher education experience is a plus.
  • HRCI, SHRM, or another professional HR or management certification are preferred.
