About the position

The Associate Director of the Master of Marketing Experiential Learning at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience of students in the program. This position is designed for a professional with a strong background in marketing strategy, brand management, and project management, who is also passionate about mentoring early career professionals. The Associate Director will work closely with the Managing Director of Experiential Learning to enhance the quality of student learning and client satisfaction through hands-on consulting projects. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including recruiting students, teaching courses in Business Fundamentals and Project Management, coaching student teams, and managing consulting engagements. The Associate Director will also be involved in business development efforts to secure high-quality consulting projects that provide valuable learning experiences for students. The Master of Marketing program combines rigorous academic training with practical, real-world experience, allowing students to engage in marketing-focused consulting projects. These projects cover a wide range of topics, including Marketing Strategy, Brand Management, Consumer Insights, Digital Marketing, and Marketing Analytics. The Associate Director will be responsible for teaching and mentoring students, ensuring they develop the necessary skills to succeed in their careers. This position requires a commitment to fostering a collaborative learning environment and empowering students to take ownership of their projects. The effectiveness of the Associate Director will be measured by the quality of student learning outcomes and the satisfaction of clients involved in the consulting projects. In addition to teaching and mentoring, the Associate Director will assist in developing and maintaining productive client relationships, negotiating project fees, and managing the overall operations of the experiential learning program. This includes overseeing budgets, accounting, and marketing efforts, as well as supporting other Carlson School activities. The Associate Director will also serve on departmental and college committees as needed, contributing to the broader mission of the Carlson School of Management and the University of Minnesota.

Responsibilities

  • Teach, coach, and mentor students in the Master of Marketing program.
  • Develop and deliver classroom content not already covered in the MSMK curricula, including project-specific content.
  • Teach project management and business fundamentals courses, responsible for 6-9 credits per academic year.
  • Empower MSMK consultants to take leadership and ownership of their projects.
  • Coach student consulting teams from project launch to conclusion and post-project review.
  • Provide regular and detailed performance feedback to MSMK consultants and assist in the assignment of grades.
  • Partner with the Graduate Business Career Center (GBCC) to mentor students and help them find internships and full-time employment.
  • Assist in developing productive client relationships, scope and confirm student projects, and negotiate fees.
  • Build and manage client relationships and manage the sales cycle to generate high-quality projects.
  • Coordinate with the Experiential Managing Director on business development and project selection across programs.
  • Assist in identifying and developing relationships with target companies.
  • Work collaboratively with clients to scope projects that are appropriate challenges for MSMK student consultants.
  • Manage enterprise operations and support Carlson School activities.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree plus at least eight (8) years of relevant experience, or a master's degree plus at least six (6) years of relevant experience.
  • More than five years of professional consulting experience or comparable corporate experience in marketing strategy, brand management, project management, or general management.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a leader and ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Significant success managing project teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated success in dealing with senior executives, clients, and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in business development and sales.
  • Experience in teaching, training, mentoring, and developing early career professionals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation abilities.
