About the position

The Associate Director of Engineering Project Management at UC Davis is responsible for overseeing a team of project managers to ensure the successful delivery of complex capital projects, typically ranging from $200 million to $400 million. This role involves high-level leadership, mentoring, and the management of significant capital improvement projects from inception through completion. The position requires expert knowledge in engineering and project management, as well as the ability to influence organizational policy and program development.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a group of project managers to deliver complex capital projects within budget and schedule parameters.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of specific large-scale capital improvement projects.
  • Establish project milestones, prepare cost estimates, and monitor adherence to master plans and budgets.
  • Serve as a technical expert, advising senior management and consulting with industry professionals on complex systems and construction features.
  • Resolve issues requiring specialized knowledge and provide guidance to lower-level project management specialists.
  • Promote emerging technologies in engineering projects through educational forums and programs.
  • Oversee the work of lower-level professional positions.

Requirements

  • License to practice engineering in the State of California.
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training in engineering.
  • 12 years of experience managing large engineering and infrastructure capital projects.
  • Expert project management and construction administration experience.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing reports and correspondence.
  • Expert knowledge of architectural, engineering, and construction practices, including California building codes.
  • Experience in building and maintaining professional relationships and supervising personnel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Experience managing engineering/infrastructure capital projects in a university campus environment.
  • Knowledge of public contracting code and experience drafting modifications to agreements.
