About the position

The Associate Director of Operations & Production at the Omaha Symphony plays a crucial role in ensuring that all concert production elements for the symphony's performances are executed to the highest artistic standards. This includes overseeing a variety of concert series such as MasterWorks, Joslyn, Live with the Omaha Symphony, Family concerts, and other special events including runouts, educational programs, tours, and outdoor performances. The position is integral to the operations team, providing leadership and direction for all production-related activities. In this role, the Associate Director collaborates closely with senior staff to plan, budget, and manage expenses, ensuring the smooth execution of all Omaha Symphony events. The responsibilities include leading the Operations team in all aspects of concert and event production, serving as a management representative at orchestra services and events, and acting as the Concert Manager when assigned. The Associate Director must maintain a thorough understanding of collective bargaining agreements and other relevant contracts to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and orchestra service schedules. Additionally, the Associate Director is responsible for reviewing artist technical riders for cost-effectiveness, managing production expenses, and seeking cost-saving opportunities. This role requires effective communication with guest artists and production managers, as well as maintaining positive relationships with local vendors and IATSE crew members. The Associate Director also coordinates runouts and tours, travels with productions as needed, and participates in meetings as part of the Artistic Operations team. The position demands flexibility, as it often requires working evenings and weekends to accommodate the symphony's performance schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the Operations team in all components of concert and event production, ensuring high standards for concerts, rehearsals, and events.
  • Serves as an official management representative at orchestra services and events, acting as the Concert Manager as assigned.
  • Maintains knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and ensures compliance with contractual obligations and orchestra service schedules.
  • Contributes to a comfortable, collaborative, and safe performance environment.
  • Reviews artist technical riders for cost-effectiveness and feasibility, making recommendations for negotiation.
  • Manages production expenses and assists in preparing concert production budgets and financial analyses.
  • Communicates with guest artists and production managers regarding Pops, Rocks, and Movie shows.
  • Works with the Operations & Production Manager to relay information to production personnel.
  • Acts as a liaison with venues regarding front-of-house communications and operational issues.
  • Maintains positive relationships with local vendors and local IATSE crew for production needs.
  • Prepares and manages communication with the orchestra regarding season schedules and changes.
  • Coordinates runouts and tours as needed, traveling with productions as assigned.
  • Participates in meetings as part of the Artistic Operations team, leading and facilitating departmental communication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in music, theatre, arts production/administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in orchestral management, operations, and production, with staff leadership experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, planning and organizational skills, and supervisory leadership skills.
  • Skilled in technical production including audio, lighting, and staging equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse personalities, including musicians, staff, conductors, and guest performers.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents such as legal contracts and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct and monitor budgets and project expenses accurately and timely.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, with the ability to learn new software applications as needed.
