About the position

This position supports the Director and campus leaders on items related to continuously improving risk management processes, risk identification, loss control, claims, insurance, and other information related to risk management assistance for two diverse academic and research campuses. CU Denver is an urban research university with educational offerings in engineering, liberal arts, business, and architecture. The CU Denver campus is located in downtown Denver on a shared Auraria campus, serving primarily a commuter and graduate student population with limited student housing. CU Anschutz in Aurora is known internationally as a premier health sciences research, education, healthcare, and patient-serving institution. The Anschutz campus has multiple hospital partners, and the University operates within its governmental authority. Students here are primarily graduate level and above in dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and the school of medicine. Working within the University's consolidated risk management program, the Associate Director must cooperatively and collaboratively work with many offices and departments within the CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses, the Auraria Higher Education Center, CU Medicine, Fort Logan, partner hospitals, cities, counties and redevelopment authorities as well as other campuses within the University of Colorado. The CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses each have their own Chancellor and senior executive teams with specific risk appetites and endeavors that require tailored risk management approaches. The Associate Director will support two campus operations and will travel to both campus locations and the CU Systems office, when necessary. The Associate Director will lead risk management projects or inquiries as the Director delegates based on experience and level of competency.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Director for CU Denver and CU Anschutz campus operations, as needed.
  • Assist the Director in overseeing, facilitating, and developing services to control and minimize risks across CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses and operations.
  • Engage and collaborate with University Risk Management staff to proactively develop and implement processes, programs, and policies that support the university's strategy for managing asset and income loss control, loss protection, and risk financing.
  • Engage and collaborate with the University Risk Management Directors to proactively develop, update, and implement the University-wide Risk Management Standards and other special projects that arise.
  • Lead campus risk management projects and inquiries, which may include analyzing and providing risk management guidance and recommendations related to risk assessments for higher risk activities and effectively communicating risk mitigation strategies.
  • Analyze and provide appropriate risk management recommendations on contracts and agreements related to insurance requirements, indemnification clauses, and other risk transfer techniques.
  • Conduct analysis of third-party contractor certificates of insurance to ensure they meet the required limits and coverage specified by university standard insurance requirements.
  • Review and process internal and external certificate of insurance requests promptly.
  • Manage and lead the annual campus certificate of the insurance renewal process.
  • Facilitates, coordinates, and engages with Campus partners to participate in insurance carrier loss control and property visits.
  • Engage and collaborate with campus partners to gather insurance underwriting data, assess new risk exposure requests, and prepare submissions for the insurance broker.
  • Provide support for international and domestic travel policies, collaborating with campus departments.
  • Participate in strategizing and creating new policies, promoting risk management techniques, and advising on CU's foreign insurance policies.
  • Assist with risk identification, risk assessment, loss control, and risk transfer related to life sciences, clinical trials, and bench research.
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external partners to create informative and engaging risk management presentations and training sessions.
  • Engage and collaborate with various partners to provide risk management guidance regarding campus disaster planning and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with University Risk Management System staff to provide services needed for Campus operations.
  • Proactively identify and implement innovative risk management initiatives to enhance the campus's overall risk profile.
  • Participate in professional development or continuing education to enhance expertise in specialized areas of risk management and insurance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in business, risk management, safety or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Six (6) years of full-time, professional experience in a risk management, safety, health and/or property & casualty industry related position.
  • Three (3) years' of leadership experience, which may be in a managerial or supervisory role.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the field of business, risk management, safety or related field.
  • Nine (9) years' professional experience in a risk management, safety, health and/or property & casualty industry related position with demonstrated supervisory responsibilities.
  • Four (4) years' of leadership experience, which may be in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Professional experience in higher education and/or Colorado public entity risk management.
  • Professional experience in healthcare or health sciences, research education.
  • Professional designation of CIC, ARM, CRM, CPCU or other like designations.
