The Associate Director of Research Compliance (HR title: Research Compliance Specialist III) at Southern Methodist University (SMU) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that research conducted at the university adheres to high standards of quality and complies with both university and regulatory agency requirements. This position is essential for advising and consulting with faculty, staff, and student researchers, fostering an environment where innovative and collaborative research can thrive while maintaining compliance with complex federal and state regulations. The Associate Director will work closely with various research departments and colleges, providing guidance and education on regulatory requirements and ethical research practices. The role encompasses several key responsibilities, including education and outreach, regulatory oversight, compliance reviews and audits, policy development, and project improvement initiatives. The Associate Director will engage with the university community to promote awareness of research compliance requirements, develop training sessions, and create comprehensive training programs for staff and other university departments. Additionally, the Associate Director will ensure that all research activities comply with applicable regulations, monitor changes in legislation, and propose updates to the university's compliance policies accordingly. Conducting reviews and making determinations on human subject, animal welfare, and biosafety research projects is a critical function of this role. The Associate Director will address any issues of non-compliance and develop corrective actions as necessary. Furthermore, the position involves working with the RIC Director to refine policies that support ethical research practices and compliance with regulatory requirements. The Associate Director will also coordinate with the RIC team to maintain an electronic research compliance management system and engage in continuous improvement projects that enhance compliance processes. This position requires a commitment to providing excellent customer service to all individuals, both internal and external to SMU, regarding research compliance matters.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and consult with faculty, staff, and student researchers on research compliance matters.
  • Engage with the university community to promote awareness of research compliance requirements.
  • Develop and provide training sessions on compliance and ethical research standards.
  • Conduct reviews and make determinations on human subject, animal welfare, and biosafety research projects.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and propose updates to the university's compliance policies accordingly.
  • Address any issues of non-compliance and develop corrective actions.
  • Work with RIC Director to develop and refine policies that support ethical research practices.
  • Coordinate with RIC team to develop and maintain an electronic research compliance management system.
  • Provide excellent customer service regarding research compliance and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree preferred, preferably in a science-related field.
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in a research compliance department, directly involved in conducting protocol reviews.
  • Significant experience interacting and working directly with faculty and student investigators is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of human subjects research-related regulations is highly preferred.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and motivate diverse teams.
  • Proven ability to interact with faculty, staff, and students, facilitating collaborative relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to proactively identify compliance issues.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state research compliance regulations, including IRB, IACUC, and IBC.
  • Effective communication skills to articulate complex compliance-related concepts clearly.
  • Experience in writing policy documents, compliance reports, and training materials.
