About the position

The Associate Director of Research Integrity & Compliance at Southern Methodist University (SMU) is responsible for advising and consulting with faculty, staff, and student researchers to ensure that research meets university and regulatory standards. This role involves developing and enforcing compliance strategies, providing education on regulatory requirements, and overseeing various research compliance programs. The position requires strong leadership and communication skills to foster collaboration across departments and ensure adherence to ethical research practices.

Responsibilities

• Advise and consult with faculty, staff, and student researchers on research compliance.
• Develop and provide training sessions on compliance and ethical research standards.
• Monitor changes in legislation and propose updates to university research policies.
• Conduct reviews and make determinations on research projects to ensure compliance.
• Work with the RIC Director to develop and refine policies supporting ethical research practices.
• Coordinate with the RIC team to maintain an electronic research compliance management system.
• Engage in continuous improvement projects to enhance compliance processes.
• Provide excellent customer service regarding research compliance matters.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in a science-related field.
• Minimum of five years of experience in a research compliance department.
• In-depth knowledge of human subjects research-related regulations.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to interact with faculty, staff, and students effectively.
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
• Effective communication skills for diverse audiences.
• Experience in strategic planning and project management.

• Experience with compliance committees that review research.
• Technical proficiency in database systems relevant to research compliance.
