About the position

The Associate Director, Science Communications will be an important member of the CAAI (Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence) team, working to ensure that our research and insights are communicated concisely using visual, interactive, and textual elements to speak to a diverse audience. This role reports directly to the Center Executive Director and is primarily responsible for executing on a vision to communicate the Center's research and insights to a public audience through social media, the web, and other possible channels. The Center has an entrepreneurial culture, and the successful candidate for this role will be a self-directed and creative professional, who is excited by the potential for creatively communicating the Center's research in a variety of modalities.

Responsibilities

  • Develops cross-channel strategy for communicating research and insights of Center-affiliated researchers.
  • Manages publishing calendar for Center web and social content.
  • Leads design and development of standalone web publications that utilize visual and interactive elements.
  • Creates digital stories that describe research in a compelling and concise way.
  • Distills complex research papers in a variety of domains into sets of clear and concise main points.
  • Manages communications projects from conception to publication.
  • Works within established style guidelines to express the unique voice and vision of the Center.
  • Collaborates with other communications groups at Chicago Booth and the University of Chicago.
  • Develops metrics for measuring the success of the Center's science communication strategy.
  • Supervises freelancers, student workers, and other staff who contribute to communications projects.
  • Contributes ideas and feedback to Center leadership to foster individual and team growth.
  • Develops, plans, and disseminates information designed to keep the public informed of the organization's programs, accomplishments, or point of view.
  • Solves moderate to complex problems related to the writing, preparation, and/or delivery of information from or about the unit.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Master's degree.
  • A minimum four years of experience managing communications projects, building websites or apps, designing graphics or illustrations, or other related work.
  • A minimum one year of experience managing others.
  • Background working in higher education ecosystem.
