About the position

The Associate Director at Dartmouth College is responsible for securing and stewarding significant gifts from individuals capable of contributing between $250,000 and over $5 million. This role involves developing and implementing strategies for donor engagement, working closely with senior leadership and volunteers to enhance the college's visibility, particularly in the West Coast region. The position requires a strong background in development within a higher education context, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage high-level relationships effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for approximately 150 individual prospects.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with senior officers, Trustees, and volunteers to solicit gifts.
  • Organize, train, and support volunteers in engaging and soliciting leadership gift prospects.
  • Qualify identified prospects through individual visits and advise the research department on potential new prospects.
  • Review and analyze the current prospect pool to assess and amend profiles as necessary.
  • Promote maximum involvement and giving to Dartmouth from identified prospects, including annual, capital, and planned gifts.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Dartmouth College Fund, Gift Planning, and Principal Giving to develop strategies for individual prospects.
  • Devise individualized engagement strategies for all prospects, ensuring high-rated prospects receive focused attention.
  • Schedule appointments and prepare necessary materials for all assigned prospects, including funding proposals and stewardship reports.
  • Identify prospects for participation in events and programs that promote cultivation.
  • Plan and oversee development events of varying scale and tone.
  • Ensure stewardship is provided to donors on existing endowment and current-use funds.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to strategic opportunities for increased prospect engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Six or more years of experience in development, with at least four years in a complex college or university development operation.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior administrators, trustees, and top volunteers.
  • Experience soliciting and closing six-figure and seven-figure gifts.
  • Ability to command respect from faculty, senior officers, and high-level volunteers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of multiple teams.
  • Understanding of significant business travel intricacies.
  • Strong organizational skills and individual initiative.
  • Strong marketing and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and planning skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
