About the position

The Associate Editor will serve as a hybrid writer and editor, collaborating closely with the Senior Editor, Crime and Senior News Editor, Crime to generate compelling stories for the crime vertical across various platforms. This role encompasses a blend of writing, reporting, and editing responsibilities, as well as leading digital coverage of significant events, police investigations, and trials. The Associate Editor will be instrumental in developing and implementing a digital coverage strategy while managing both routine daily news and breaking news situations. The ideal candidate is a dynamic editor with a knack for uncovering unique and engaging stories. They should possess strong line editing skills and be adept at crafting headlines, demonstrating sound news judgment and the ability to prioritize incoming stories from multiple angles. Working efficiently under tight deadlines is crucial, as is the ability to ideate and identify key second-beat and breakout opportunities related to breaking news and trending true crime stories on social media. A fluent understanding of the digital landscape, including content streams, SEO, and analytics, is essential, along with meticulous organizational skills. The Associate Editor may also be required to assist with breaking news and event coverage during nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Finding, assigning, and editing digital stories while collaborating with the legal team on story review.
  • Strategizing and coordinating coverage, making assignments, and overseeing execution based on the editorial calendar and data analytics.
  • Assisting in developing sources and long-term reporting initiatives.
  • Writing and reporting on various stories as needed.
  • Preparing for news moments ahead of time and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent training and/or work experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a high-volume digital news operation.
  • Proven track record of creating content that increases traffic and engagement using an analytics-driven approach.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with impeccable journalistic standards and attention to detail.
  • Ability to respond quickly to breaking news and manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Experience with SEO, content management systems, and analytics.
  • Creative idea generator with fresh approaches to content packaging.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with various departments.
  • Sound news judgment and familiarity with the PEOPLE brand.
