About the position

The Associate Editor at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum plays a crucial role in the Publications Department, focusing on editing exhibition didactics and public-facing materials. This position involves collaboration with Senior Editors on exhibition catalogues and providing administrative support for departmental operations. The role is integral to producing high-quality publications that engage a diverse audience and promote the museum's mission of understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as editor and project manager for most exhibition didactics, collaborating with curators and managing projects through production.
  • Copyedit and proofread public-facing printed and digital content for various museum departments.
  • Assist Senior Editors with book projects, including research, editing bibliographies, fact-checking, and proofreading layouts.
  • Schedule departmental meetings and maintain records, including invoices and publication lists.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and managing interns.
  • Prepare sales materials for book distributors and coordinate deadlines for editorial and production staff.
  • Obtain copyright information, assign ISBNs, and create barcodes for publications.
  • Organize gallery catalogue orders and manage invoicing.
  • Maintain the Publications section on the museum's website and retail store.
  • Order supplies and prepare catalogues for mailing.
  • Draft and manage agreements for contractors and authors.
  • Maintain and track departmental budgets and expenses.

Requirements

  • 4-6 years of experience in editorial work, preferably in an art-related field or scholarly publishing.
  • Solid understanding of modern and contemporary art.
  • Knowledge of long-form editing style and scholarly citation practices.
  • Experience in copyediting or copywriting interpretive materials and marketing communications is a plus.
  • Ability to balance editing responsibilities with project management and administration.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Highly organized with a rigorous sense of detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of style/usage materials, especially the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Proficiency with InDesign is preferred.
  • Knowledge of other languages is a plus.
