About the position

PowerSchool's Customer Education division is dedicated to developing and delivering training for K-12 education customers through various platforms, including on-site sessions, conferences, and online formats. The division aims to enhance customer success with PowerSchool products by providing engaging, job-centered, practical, and user-friendly training tutorials and materials. The team is responsible for producing both technical and narrative content that caters to a wide range of topics, from technical software processes to K-12 professional development concepts. The Associate Editor plays a crucial role in this process, working under the close supervision of the Manager of Professional Services. This position involves reviewing, editing, and rewriting instructional materials in collaboration with authors to ensure that all deliverables adhere to the Customer Education style guide and meet quality standards. The Associate Editor will work closely with various team members, including Instructional Designers, eLearning Developers, Multi-Media Designers, and Graphic Designers, to create training curricula that effectively meet the needs and requirements of customers. In this role, the Associate Editor represents the reader of Customer Education materials and is responsible for conducting mechanical style edits to ensure compliance with style guide standards, as well as language edits to enhance readability. The Associate Editor will engage in the training materials development process by reviewing text files and transcripts for errors, ensuring completeness and accuracy, and conferring with authors regarding content changes. This position also requires the Associate Editor to provide status updates, attend relevant meetings, and gain familiarity with PowerSchool's K-12 Technology products.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct mechanical style edits to ensure text meets style guide standards.
  • Perform language edits to ensure materials are easy to read.
  • Read text files and transcripts to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
  • Review text and eLearning course files for completeness, accuracy, and correctness of language use.
  • Identify inconsistencies in thought, development, or organization.
  • Confer with authors regarding changes in content, style, or organization.
  • Revise manuscripts to meet predetermined standards of style and accuracy.
  • Provide status updates as required.
  • Attend team and product-related meetings as needed.
  • Gain familiarity with the features, processes, functions, and uses of PowerSchool's K-12 Technology products.
  • Perform all other responsibilities assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a writer or editor.
  • Emerging computer skills with some proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience in K-12 education is a plus.
  • Basic experience reviewing instructional media, including highly visual and web-based media.
  • Basic experience in technical writing, news copy, or creative writing.
  • Emerging knowledge of Articulate 360 (including Rise and Storyline) and learning management systems.
  • Emerging knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, Jira, and other technical collaborative environments.
  • Basic understanding of the editorial review process, adult learning theories, and instructional development and design methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with instructional media and technical writing.
