About the position

WSP is currently seeking a full-time Electrical Engineer to join our Property & Buildings team in Chicago, IL. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in building electrical design, energy conservation, and resiliency, along with a solid understanding of electrical systems. Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate closely with a team of experienced professionals are essential to meet our clients' objectives and solve complex engineering problems. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and documenting electrical systems for a diverse range of project types across various market sectors. This position offers an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge, skills, and responsibilities in engineering, project management, and client engagement. As an Associate Electrical Engineer, you will work with minimal supervision to assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to substation components and equipment specifications for procurement package development. You will engage in the design and review processes in accordance with IEEE/NESC Standards and NERC regulations. Your responsibilities will include performing basic professional electrical engineering work, such as creating single line and three line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and general arrangements for substation layouts. You will also be involved in grounding grid design and lightning protection, ensuring compliance with applicable rules and standards. In addition, you will provide technical assistance on design requirements, equipment sizing, and cabling strategies to ensure the safety and functionality of systems and infrastructure. Supporting senior engineers, you will conduct research and make recommendations on fundamental components identified in design requirements, as well as assist with verifying site characteristics and providing technical assistance on engineering, design, testing, maintenance, and construction procedures. You will develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, voltage drop, and power distribution, and write technical reports summarizing your research findings. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work with cross-functional teams to execute project work, including project controls, business deployment, and permitting teams. You will also assist in work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work. Adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies, you will exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and conduct. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs arise.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data relating to substation components and equipment specifications.
  • Perform basic professional electrical engineering work relating to the design of single line, three line, and wiring diagrams.
  • Provide technical assistance on design requirements, equipment sizing, and cabling strategies.
  • Support senior engineers with research and recommendations on design requirements and field equipment applications.
  • Assist with verifying site characteristics and providing technical assistance on engineering and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, voltage drop, and power distribution.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research findings and generating accurate documentation.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work, including project controls and permitting teams.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering.
  • Proficient with electrical engineering principles, practices, and design/build applications.
  • Intermediate knowledge of building, electrical, and energy codes.
  • Experience developing high-quality design documents using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Proficient with technical writing, load calculations, and discipline-specific design software.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to abide by WSP's health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or eligibility for licensure.
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Additional industry-specific certifications or registrations (LEED AP, DBIA, etc).
