About the position

The Associate Engineer position within the City and County of San Francisco is a vital role that encompasses a range of professional engineering tasks both in the field and office settings. Under general direction, the Associate Engineer is responsible for supervising junior engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, and other personnel involved in various engineering projects. This position plays a crucial part in the city's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its diverse population through effective urban development and infrastructure management. The essential functions of the Associate Engineer may vary based on specific assignments. Key responsibilities include preparing engineering designs, drawings, and specifications, as well as developing cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials, and equipment necessary for construction and maintenance projects. The Associate Engineer will provide engineering support to operations staff, review existing conditions, and conduct studies to identify and analyze samples and data. Problem-solving is a critical aspect of this role, ensuring compliance with regulatory and performance standards. In addition to technical tasks, the Associate Engineer will supervise the preparation of detailed engineering drawings and specifications, assign and review the work of subordinate staff and consultants, and determine the resources necessary to complete assigned work. Responsibilities also include reviewing plans, permit applications, and specifications developed by staff and contractors, verifying quantities and safety requirements, and preparing a variety of technical reports and documentation. The role involves interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating staff, as well as preparing bid documents and conducting meetings and presentations. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional engineering work in the field and office.
  • Supervise the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, and surveyors.
  • Prepare engineering designs, drawings, and specifications.

  • Prepare and supervise the preparation of technical engineering reports.
  • Interview, select, train, monitor, evaluate, and counsel staff.
  • Prepare bid documents and review and analyze bids.
  • Conduct meetings and make presentations.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, with two (2) years equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Civil Engineer or higher.
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering.
