About the position

The DER Planning Associate Engineer in System Planning at Eversource Energy focuses on providing expertise in distributed energy resources (DER) power system studies and project development. This role involves technical review and modeling of generation and storage facilities that connect to the distribution system, requiring the analysis and planning of distribution lines and substation facilities. The position plays a critical role in ensuring reliable energy delivery and superior customer service by assessing the impact of DER on the distribution system.

Responsibilities

  • Develop distribution system power flow models for studying the interconnection of generation and storage using Synergi and PSCAD Software.
  • Assist in the assessment and analysis of proposed solutions for integrating DER and its impact on the distribution and ISO-NE regional system.
  • Manage local impact analysis of distribution interconnections on the Eversource distribution system, including reviewing Pre-Application Report requests and feasibility assessments.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to determine planning needs and proposed plans.
  • Verify the technical feasibility of proposed plans using industry-accepted techniques.
  • Develop design solutions and alternatives to mitigate identified assessment criteria violations.
  • Conduct assessments to meet DER interconnections by identifying key technical issues and developing solutions.
  • Demonstrate ownership of projects and accountability for overall project schedules.
  • Participate in customer calls to defend technical findings and provide weekly updates on project deliverables.
  • Assist with preparing internal authorization forms and present at monthly meetings.
  • Represent the department on various industry-related committees and serve on cross-functional teams to develop engineering solutions.
  • Manage the approved inverter list by reviewing UL certifications for inverters.
  • Communicate results of analyses and action plans effectively to stakeholders.
  • Perform emergent storm assignments as needed during adverse conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • 0-3 years of experience in an electric utility is preferred.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as DG, storage, reliability, load flow, flicker, stability, short circuit, voltage regulation, transients, power factor, and losses.
  • Technical understanding of power delivery system operations and industry fundamentals.
  • Experience using power system modeling and simulation software for steady state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, presentation, negotiation, and persuasion skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • EIT or Professional Engineer's License preferred.
