About the position

The Associate General Counsel/Real Estate Property Manager at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice and assistance related to the university's real estate interests. This role involves managing the university's real property portfolio, overseeing transactional and property management functions, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and the ability to handle complex projects independently and with guidance from senior legal staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage UNC Charlotte's real property portfolio as the University's Real Property Manager.
  • Coordinate with the UNC System Office and State Property Office for real property reports.
  • Chair and convene the campus property review committee.
  • Prepare materials for the Board of Trustees and coordinate with the UNC System Office for Board of Governors approvals.
  • Review, redline, and negotiate real estate documents and transactions.
  • Draft and review complex commercial contracts and corporate entity documents.
  • Oversee University property management functions, including managing leases and coordinating with Facilities Management.
  • Maintain relationships with external brokers and manage brokerage contracts.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management to obtain real property surveys and environmental reports.
  • Manage legal documents for multiple real estate and construction projects.
  • Facilitate discussions of land and property issues with various stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Business Affairs to establish goals and procedures for real property acquisition and use.
  • Assist University associated entities in real property transactions.
  • Maintain organized records of all real property matters.
  • Consult and advise senior administrators on applicable laws and regulations related to real property.
  • Assist with long-range planning for the University's real property holdings.
  • Prepare presentations and lead special project initiatives related to land and property matters.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • At least five (5) years of legal practice experience in real estate transactions, including contract review, drafting, and negotiation.

Nice-to-haves

  • In-depth understanding of a university's real property transactions and related policies.
  • Proven experience in managing commercial property transactions, including brokerage and property management services.
  • Prior in-depth real property practice experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Experience in North Carolina government land management and compliance with statutes.
  • Experience coordinating long-range development planning for public land.
  • Proven ability to review and assess real property appraisals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • High moral and ethical standards in professional practice.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
