The Associate Industrial Engineer at Smithfield Foods plays a crucial role in supporting process improvement efforts, projects, and initiatives within the facility. The Associate Industrial Engineer will engage in problem-solving efforts on selected projects aimed at enhancing worker efficiency, improving yield, reducing waste, and optimizing workplace conditions. Additionally, this role involves establishing accurate cost standards and procedures, collaborating closely with management to define, develop, and implement continuous improvement projects across all areas of plant operations. In this position, the Associate Industrial Engineer will utilize business analytics and industrial engineering tools to analyze functional statements, organization charts, and project information. This analysis will help identify functions and responsibilities of workers and work units, as well as areas of duplication. The role requires establishing work measurement programs, analyzing work samples, and developing standards for labor utilization. Furthermore, the Associate Industrial Engineer will review methods for improving worker efficiency and reducing waste, which may include restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflows, relocating workstations, and purchasing new equipment. The successful candidate will implement improvement methods based on cutting-edge technologies and industrial engineering principles to enhance operating performance while minimizing waste, delays, and costs. This includes monitoring installations to ensure that proposal specifications and budgets are adhered to. The Associate Industrial Engineer will also maintain management systems for cost analysis, financial planning, wage and salary administration, and job evaluation, ensuring effective productivity and production measurements are established for identified processes in the plant. Moreover, the role involves analyzing, recommending, and implementing enhancements to existing work methods, flows, and processes to improve current capabilities. Communication with management regarding changes in work standards is essential, as is the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for methods and processes. The Associate Industrial Engineer will manage multiple projects, ensuring timely completion according to schedule and budget guidelines, while also researching technological advancements to develop cost-effective improvements to operating methods and procedures. Additionally, coaching, developing, and training plant employees on utilizing Smithfield's Management Operating System and data utilization for plant improvement is a key responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize business analytics and industrial engineering tools to study functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine functions and responsibilities of workers and work units and to identify areas of duplication.
  • Establish work measurement programs and analyze work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
  • Analyze work force utilization, facility layout, and operational data such as production costs, process flow charts, and production schedules to determine efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
  • Review methods for improving worker efficiency and reducing waste of materials and utilities such as restructuring job duties, reorganization of workflow, relocating workstations and equipment, and purchase of equipment.
  • Implement methods of improvement based on leading edge technologies and industrial engineering principles to improve operating performance and reduce waste, delays and costs.
  • Monitor installation and ensure proposal specifications and budget are met.
  • Maintain management systems for cost analysis, financial planning, wage and salary administration, and job evaluation.
  • Ensure effective productivity and production measurements are established for identified processes in the plant and monitor system expansion as necessary.
  • Analyze, recommend, and implement enhancements to existing work methods, flows and processes to improve current capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Industrial Engineering Degree preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Microsoft Suite: including, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Strong planning, organization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to use exposure monitoring equipment, interpret and communicate results.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical skills.
