About the position

The Associate Industrial Engineer at Smithfield Foods plays a crucial role in supporting process improvement efforts, projects, and initiatives within the facility. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to optimizing the efficiency of operations by utilizing various industrial engineering tools and methodologies. The Associate Industrial Engineer will work closely with management to define, develop, and implement continuous improvement projects across all areas of plant operations. This role involves analyzing workforce utilization, facility layout, and operational data to identify areas for improvement and to enhance productivity while reducing waste and costs. In this position, the Associate Industrial Engineer will be responsible for establishing work measurement programs, analyzing work samples, and developing standards for labor utilization. They will also review and recommend methods for improving worker efficiency, which may include restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflows, and purchasing new equipment. The role requires a proactive approach to implementing improvements based on cutting-edge technologies and industrial engineering principles, ensuring that all proposals meet specifications and budget constraints. Additionally, the Associate Industrial Engineer will maintain management systems for cost analysis and financial planning, ensuring effective productivity measurements are established for identified processes. They will communicate changes in work standards to management, develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and manage multiple projects to ensure timely completion within budget guidelines. The position also involves coaching and training plant employees on utilizing Smithfield's Management Operating System and leveraging data to enhance operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize business analytics and industrial engineering tools to study functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine functions and responsibilities of workers and work units.
  • Establish work measurement programs and analyze work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
  • Analyze workforce utilization, facility layout, and operational data such as production costs, process flow charts, and production schedules to determine efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
  • Review methods for improving worker efficiency and reducing waste of materials and utilities, including restructuring job duties and reorganizing workflows.
  • Implement methods of improvement based on leading-edge technologies and industrial engineering principles to improve operating performance and reduce waste, delays, and costs.
  • Monitor installation and ensure proposal specifications and budget are met.
  • Maintain management systems for cost analysis, financial planning, wage and salary administration, and job evaluation.
  • Ensure effective productivity and production measurements are established for identified processes in the plant.
  • Analyze, recommend, and implement enhancements to existing work methods, flows, and processes to improve current capabilities.
  • Communicate with management on all changes in work standards.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for methods and processes.
  • Manage multiple projects ensuring on-time completion according to schedule and within budget guidelines.
  • Research technology advancements and systems to develop cost-effective improvements to operating methods and procedures.
  • Coach, develop, and train plant employees on utilizing Smithfield's Management Operating System.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Industrial Engineering Degree preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Microsoft Suite: including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong planning, organization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to use exposure monitoring equipment, interpret and communicate results.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical skills.
