About the position

The Associate Investment Manager - Portfolio Strategy position at the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is a pivotal role within the Total Fund Portfolio Management (TFPM) group. This position offers a high level of decision-making authority in the development of investment strategies and portfolio structuring, directly contributing to CalPERS' mission of serving its members and the broader community. As the nation's largest public pension fund, with assets totaling approximately $492.77 billion, CalPERS is recognized for its leadership and innovation in the investment sector. The role is based in Sacramento, CA, and allows for a hybrid work schedule, providing flexibility with up to two days of remote work each week. In this role, the Associate Investment Manager will be responsible for managing and ensuring the generation and delivery of model-driven asset allocation strategies. This involves coordinating with various internal staff, external research consultants, data vendors, and benchmark providers to ensure that the strategies align with compliance requirements and risk exposures. The position requires a thorough review of model outputs and effective communication with all stakeholders to facilitate internal implementation of strategies. The Associate Investment Manager will also act as a subject matter expert in private asset class research and allocation processes, providing in-depth analysis of private company fundamentals, investment alternatives, and industry competitiveness. A key aspect of the role includes enhancing and automating forecasting frameworks and tools for various private asset strategies, including Private Equity, LBO, Growth Equity, VC, Real Assets, and Infrastructure. This position is integral to driving the strategic direction of CalPERS' investment portfolio and ensuring that the organization meets its long-term financial goals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and ensure the generation and/or delivery of model-driven asset allocation strategies.
  • Coordinate with various staff, external research consultants, data vendors, and benchmark providers.
  • Review model output and manage adherence with compliance requirements and risk exposures.
  • Oversee communication between all stakeholders, culminating with internal implementation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in private asset class research and allocation-related processes.
  • Provide in-depth analysis of private company fundamentals, investment alternatives, and industry competitiveness.
  • Enhance and automate Private Equity LBO/Growth Equity/VC/Real Assets/Infrastructure returns and risk forecasting frameworks and tools.

Requirements

  • Experience in investment management or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills with a focus on private asset classes.
