About The Position

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) is seeking an Associate Legal Officer for the Department of Legal Affairs, specifically within the IP Transactional Group. This group is responsible for the facilitation, evaluation, management, and protection of UTMB's intellectual property assets. The role involves providing professional legal guidance and assistance to various UTMB departments and administration under supervision. The Associate Legal Officer will work closely with the Office of Technology Transfer, faculty, staff, and outside patent counsel to manage UTMB's patent portfolio effectively. In this position, the Associate Legal Officer will advise on the evaluation of patent applications, review invention disclosures in accordance with U.S. Patent Laws, and provide reports for invention dispositions. This will enable UTMB to make informed decisions regarding patent protection. The role also includes ensuring compliance with patent regulations by timely reporting required information to government agencies and maintaining the invention disclosure and patent docket. Additionally, the Associate Legal Officer will manage invoices from outside patent counsel and identify cost-saving initiatives. The position requires negotiation of contracts such as Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs), Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), and industry-funded research and license agreements, ensuring compliance with UTMB and UT System IP policies. The Associate Legal Officer will also conduct training courses on IP protection and management for faculty researchers, postdoctoral students, and contract personnel within the UTMB community. Regular communication with the Assistant Vice President (Intellectual Property) regarding project developments and status reports is essential. The role demands effective prioritization of work to meet designated timeframes and the establishment of positive working relationships within the department and the broader UTMB and local community. The position is fully remote, but the candidate must reside in Texas and be available for occasional onsite meetings as requested.
