About the position

At MITRE, we are seeking a creative and analytical Associate Operations Research Analyst to join our Operations Research department. This role is an opportunity to engage in meaningful work that tackles some of the nation's toughest challenges. Our department consists of over 60 operations research professionals, including nearly 30 PhDs, who provide thought leadership on a variety of strategic and technical issues. We perform analyses that enable our sponsors to make more effective decisions and lead internal research and development activities to introduce new technical capabilities into the public sector. As trusted advisors to government sponsors, we address a range of technical topics, applying our problem-solving skills to complex interdisciplinary problems that occur at the intersection of organizations, operations, and technology. In this position, you will apply advanced analytical and mathematical techniques to assist in making difficult policy and acquisition decisions, maximizing operational effectiveness and efficiency, and achieving high-quality engineering solutions. You will present your results in an intuitive and actionable manner that can be understood by all sponsor audiences, regardless of their technical expertise. The role requires both independent work and collaboration with a team of technical staff, and you will need to thrive in a hybrid work environment that includes in-person presence. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about applying operations research, statistics, and data analytics to real-world problems. You should be willing to adapt and learn, demonstrating knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and tools for conducting operations research, statistical analysis, or data analytic studies. Experience in using tools and techniques for mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, probability modeling, and simulation is essential. Additionally, proficiency in at least one modern programming language and one simulation, optimization, or business intelligence platform is required. Candidates must also be capable of obtaining and maintaining a secret security clearance, as this position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site work.

Requirements

  • Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent knowledge and skills in a related field.
  • Passionate about applying operations research, statistics, and data analytics to real-world problems.
  • Willing to adapt and learn.
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, methods, and tools for conducting operations research, statistical analysis, or data analytic studies.
  • Experience in using tools and techniques for mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, probability modeling, and simulation.
  • Demonstrated ability to use at least one modern programming language (e.g., RStudio, MATLAB, Python, Java).
  • Demonstrated ability to use at least one simulation, optimization, or business intelligence platform (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, Stella, Simio, Arena, AnyLogic, SimPy, RSimmer, SAS, Tableau).
  • Must be capable of obtaining & maintaining secret security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preference given to qualified candidates with active clearance.
  • Experience working with/for agencies and/or departments of the US Government (e.g., FAA, DoD, DoE, DHS, Treasury, IRS).
