About the position

The Associate Producer for AirTalk at Southern California Public Radio plays a crucial role in developing engaging multi-platform segments for a daily public affairs program. This position focuses on connecting with a diverse Southern Californian audience by identifying relevant issues, guests, and conversations. The successful candidate will enhance the program's reach through various media channels, including broadcast, social media, and live events, while ensuring a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of production.

Responsibilities

  • Pitches stories and guest ideas daily.
  • Identifies, researches, and books newsmakers and guests as assigned by the Senior Producer.
  • Prepares research material for the host and collaborates on show segments with production staff.
  • Screens calls during live show broadcasts.
  • Directs and line produces the show as assigned.
  • Engages the audience online through social media and repackages content for various platforms.
  • Writes promos, scripts, and edits copy as necessary.
  • Captures, edits, and uploads audio clips for live broadcasts.
  • Trains and mentors apprentice news clerks and interns.
  • Maintains relationships with technical staff and other departments.
  • Coordinates special projects, live events, and series.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Two or more years of production, editorial, or related experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interviewing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and adapt to breaking news.
  • Knowledge of effective social media messaging and platforms.
  • Familiarity with digital audio workstations like Adobe Audition.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with call-in, talk show, or public affairs programming.
  • Familiarity with Southern California demographics and influential figures.
  • Experience in field production.
  • Knowledge of Spanish.
