About the position

The Associate Professional Engineer position in the Public Works Department of the City of Santa Cruz involves supervising and performing the planning, designing, and coordination of engineering projects related to public works and water management. This role includes overseeing project personnel, coordinating grant applications, and ensuring compliance with regulations while executing capital improvement projects, particularly in the Wastewater Storm Water Engineering Group.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and perform planning, designing, and coordinating of engineering projects.
  • Coordinate grant applications and project permits.
  • Oversee service applications and customer contacts.
  • Supervise assigned project personnel.
  • Act as design team leader for major engineering projects.
  • Prepare estimates of time and material costs and monitor project progress.
  • Design and conduct special engineering studies and prepare reports.
  • Inspect and supervise construction projects and make field changes as necessary.
  • Coordinate project design and development with outside consultants.
  • Prepare and administer contract documents and execution of contracts.
  • Train and supervise subordinate engineering personnel.
  • Respond to public complaints or inquiries regarding assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in Civil Engineering or related field, including one year of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of contract administration and project management.
  • Knowledge of modern methods and techniques used in engineering design, estimation, and specifications.
  • Ability to prepare engineering plans, designs, estimates, and specifications.
