The College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) and the Connected Systems Institute (CSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invite applications for a tenured faculty member to be the Director of Research for CSI, with a start date of August 2025 or earlier. This strategic partnership between CEAS and CSI seeks to strengthen and expand our research leadership in Advanced Manufacturing and Industry 4.0. The Director of Research will serve as a key member of the CSI leadership team, responsible for shaping and implementing the Institute's research vision and mission. The successful candidate will collaborate with CEAS faculty, faculty from across campus, and industry partners. They will also work with UWM centers and institutes, build highly performing research teams, and contribute to engineering or computer science curriculum. The role involves actively fostering new collaborations.

Responsibilities

  • Shape and implement the research vision and mission of the Connected Systems Institute (CSI).
  • Collaborate with CEAS faculty and faculty from across the university.
  • Conduct independent research and lead interdisciplinary teams in Industry 4.0 research.
  • Build highly effective research teams consisting of professional staff, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Actively collaborate with current industry partners and cultivate new partnerships.
  • Provide thought leadership around modern curricula related to Industry 4.0.
  • Advise students as part of CSI research.
  • Contribute to the broader CEAS community.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in an appropriate Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related science field.
  • Holding the rank of associate or full professor with tenure or possessing a distinguished record of scholarly achievements sufficient to meet the criteria for tenure at the rank of associate or full professor at UWM.
  • A strong record of securing external funding, publishing, mentorship, conducting research, and scholarship appropriate with their rank.

Nice-to-haves

  • A proven research record in Industry 4.0 topics, including AI manufacturing, robotics, system integration, and cybersecurity.
  • Demonstrated administrative and research leadership within a center or institute.
  • Teaching experience related to Industry 4.0.
  • Track record of forming and leading cross-disciplinary research teams that include industrial partners.
  • Experience conducting research in collaboration with industrial partners or stakeholders.
