About the position

The Science Communicator position at SFEI's Clean Water Program focuses on effectively communicating scientific information related to water quality and environmental issues to a diverse audience. The role involves creating engaging content, developing outreach strategies, and collaborating with scientists to promote understanding of critical environmental challenges such as PFAS and microplastics. This position is ideal for someone passionate about science communication and environmental advocacy, with a strong emphasis on translating complex scientific concepts into accessible language for the public.

Responsibilities

  • Write engaging and accessible content for websites, newsletters, fact sheets, and social media platforms.
  • Lead the preparation of program annual reports.
  • Develop and refine communications strategies for key projects and scientific reports in collaboration with lead scientists.
  • Draft media advisories and press releases, track media hits, and develop targeted media contact lists.
  • Manage social media strategies and guidelines to effectively communicate the science of the Clean Water Program.
  • Monitor and report on content performance to optimize communication efforts.
  • Participate in the planning and conceptualization of website designs to enhance engagement.
  • Assist with organizing and hosting annual stakeholder meetings and other outreach events.
  • Support content development related to fundraising efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in media, journalism, or a relevant field with at least 6 years of science communications experience, or a Master's degree with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly in science writing related to toxics, chemistry, environmental science, or public health.
  • Proven expertise in copywriting and content marketing.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite Applications and social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple detail-oriented tasks.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest in working in a mission-driven environmental science non-profit.
  • Experience communicating technical topics to the public, particularly in pollution, environmental science, or public health.
